Construction News Awards (2016)
A landmark project which includes a 172-bed 4 star Hilton hotel with 15 no. ‘Ted Baker styled’ luxury apartments above, a 120-bed Hampton by Hilton, 45 no. apartments designed for Redrow and a 2-storey basement car park. Located on a complex site in Bournemouth town centre, the development deals with a dramatic ground level difference of over 21m from top to bottom and redefines the coastal resort’s skyline.
The development consists of three building blocks which culminate in a 13-storey glazed tower facing the seafront at the most southerly part of the site. The smooth rounded concrete balconies of the tower pay homage to the art deco and modernist buildings still prevalent in the town today, whilst the crisp white render and bright coloured panels give it a contemporary edge.
White Ink Architects worked closely with McAleer & Rushe Contractors from tender stage to develop the RIBA Stage C drawings by Cube Architects into a scheme which was both financially viable and met the strict requirements of the hotelier as outlined in their Brand Standards.
White Ink Architects were always happy to engage in matters of minor detail, and that underpinned the success of this development. They work in a collaborative and responsive way showing consideration and understanding of our functional needs, and our financial and time constraints. We are delighted with the results which, despite the complexity of the brief and scale of development, optimise the potential of a restrictive, difficult urban site and deliver a series of high-quality, unique and innovative buildings which have made a positive contribution to the urban realm and townscape of Bournemouth.Peter Tisdale, THAT Group
