Barnsbury square is located in Islington, London, on the site of a former factory. The development includes 10 no. luxury apartments, 3 no. commercial units and a basement car park, accessed by a car lift. The site is long and narrow, confined by existing residential buildings to each side and streets to either end, making both access to the building and the provision of natural light a challenge.
In order to optimise light and the aspect of the residential accommodation, the apartments are arranged around a central landscaped courtyard. Each apartment has access to a private, covered balcony which appear as a series of stacked cubes to the façade - mimicking the square bay windows of the neighbouring Georgian houses. The balconies have full-height back-lit opaque glass screens which help to animate the façade at dusk. The use of corten steel and glass tubes pay homage to the site’s industrial past.
